Overview

Virtual Drivers for macOS creates real virtual devices from one native Mac workspace: displays, audio loopback cables with a live mixer, cameras, MIDI endpoints, keyboards, mice and gamepads, a private encrypted packet interface, and disk images. It comes from the developers of the Windows Virtual Display Driver and Virtual Audio Driver and the Linux Virtual Display Driver.

Each driver has its own Advanced section, and 28 workflow profiles set up common jobs such as streaming, remote work, meetings, presentations, music, game controls, private networking and portable storage. Cameras use a real source you choose (a display, window, app, physical camera, image or video), MIDI supports both 1.0 and 2.0/UMP with a built-in MIDI Lab, and storage images can be AES-256 encrypted. A bundled vdd command exposes everything to scripts as JSON.

It is in Early Access for $14.99, on itch.io, as a Developer ID signed and notarized download for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later (virtual HID devices need macOS 15). No SIP changes or reduced-security mode are required. The virtual display relies on an undocumented CoreGraphics interface, so behaviour can change with macOS updates, and HDR and display rotation aren't offered.

Questions

Do I have to turn off System Integrity Protection?

No. No SIP changes or reduced-security mode are required. macOS asks you to approve the audio helper and the camera and network extensions.

Does a virtual display survive quitting the app?

No. Displays last while the app is running.

Is Virtual Network a VPN service?

No. It's an encrypted private packet tunnel to a companion peer you configure and run yourself. No public VPN service is supplied, and public or default routes are blocked.

Is it open source like the Windows driver?

No. The Windows Virtual Display Driver is MIT-licensed, but Virtual Drivers for macOS is a separate app and its source isn't public.

How do I know the download is genuine?

Release 26.10.5.6 (build 41) is Developer ID signed, notarized by Apple and stapled, and PyroSoft checked that the files in the itch.io download match the signed release. The itch page lists its SHA-256: 3cea6a41c206aba41876699c7b778407ae66173d4352fc48952ca19be5616b79.
