Before Buying Another Webcam, I Tried My iPhone with EpocCam
Switching between my webcams and a handheld phone feed in this 2022 setup.
Article published November 4, 2026.
The camera I wanted to try was already in my pocket. In this May 2022 video, I switch from my webcam setup to an iPhone feed using Elgato’s EpocCam, and the difference immediately gets my attention.
The phone joins the camera lineup
I start with a standard 1080p webcam and an AnkerWork C200 view. Anker had sent me the C200. Around 1:42, I switch to the phone camera; the image moves a little because I am holding the phone rather than using a fixed mount.
I like the result in that setup. It is a personal side-by-side impression, with different cameras and framing, rather than a controlled test establishing that a phone beats every dedicated webcam.
Sensor resolution and webcam output are different
I discuss connecting through Wi-Fi or USB and using a tripod or desk mount. Although I talk about the phone’s 4K sensor, I also say I believe EpocCam’s output is limited to 1080p at that time. This recording does not establish a 4K webcam feed or promise later software features.
The original Elgato link is below. For another camera comparison from my desk, I later put the Facecam Pro beside the AnkerWork C200 and changed the room lighting.
