Claude vs. ChatGPT: Two Python Git Apps from the Same Prompt
A March 2025 coding experiment with Claude 3.7 Sonnet and o3-mini-high.
Article published November 4, 2026.
Give two coding assistants the same request, then actually open what they make. That is the idea behind this March 2025 experiment with Claude 3.7 Sonnet and ChatGPT's o3-mini-high.
The task is a Python desktop Git client with a modern interface and support beyond GitHub. I paste the same prompt into both and compare the generated apps.
More code is a difference, not the whole result
ChatGPT finishes first. Claude keeps going and needs a continuation before the answer is complete. In this run, I count 225 lines for the ChatGPT version and 1,417 for Claude's.
That makes for an interesting contrast, but code length alone does not establish correctness. The next step is launching both.
Cloning the same repository
The ChatGPT app gives me a straightforward clone dialog. I enter a repository URL and choose a local folder. The interface briefly shows as not responding, then the clone completes and the commit history appears.
After installing a dependency, I open Claude's version. Its interface has more organization, repository tabs and settings. I clone the same repository, watch the folder progress and open the completed checkout without the same visible hang.
What this one challenge tells me
I prefer Claude's result in this recording because of the interface and the way that clone operation behaves. I do not test every pull, push, branch or credential-storage path. A visible button is not proof that its feature is safe or complete.
I later explored Claude with local file access through MCP, which is a different workflow from copying generated scripts into files. Both articles describe those particular 2025 sessions, not a ranking of today's models.
This is one prompt and two initial outputs. It is a useful way to compare what needs fixing next, rather than a benchmark of all AI coding work.
