TP-Link LS1008G: My Simple Answer to Running Out of Network Ports

Opening an eight-port switch after deciding what my desk network actually needed.

Article published November 4, 2026.

I was looking at network upgrades and making the problem more complicated than it needed to be. At the time of this recording, I mainly wanted more wired connections. My four-port setup was running out of room.

That brought me to the TP-Link LS1008G: a small, eight-port switch instead of a much bigger network project.

Keep the original use case in mind

I explain that my internet connection was about a gigabit and that I was not doing frequent large local transfers then. That is the context for choosing this switch, not a statement about my current internet service or every network’s needs.

When I open it, I look over the row of Ethernet ports, the case and the mounting points underneath. A connection back to the router would use one of those ports in the arrangement I am describing.

The adapter is in the box

I find the supplied power adapter and read its label. That is the intended power arrangement shown in this session; I am not testing an alternate USB power source.

I also discuss the advertised gigabit and plug-and-play features. There is no file-transfer benchmark, measured power result or completed network installation in this recording.

More connections without a complicated plan

What appealed to me was a straightforward way to connect a few more devices. My price reaction belongs to the October 2024 purchase, rather than a promise about what the switch costs today.
