My Shure SM7B Upgrade: Open the Box and Hear the New Setup

A microphone unboxing with the EQ and noise-removal processing disclosed.

Article published November 4, 2026.

This microphone upgrade feels like a milestone. I have been making videos for a long time, and I am excited to get the SM7B into the setup I use for courses, streaming and YouTube.

The audio has some processing

You are hearing the SM7B during the recording, but I explain up front that I have run it through SteelSeries Sonar with EQ and background-noise removal. The video is a sample of that setup, rather than an untouched microphone recording.

That distinction matters if you are listening to decide how a microphone might sound in your own room.

What comes out of the box

I take a look at the spare windscreen, mounting adapter, paperwork and small accessories. I leave the familiar windscreen on for the initial setup.

The microphone has some real weight to it when I lift it out. I also show the rear cover and think about how it will look on the streaming desk.

An upgrade that carries into the courses

I talk about my GameDev.tv work helping make these equipment changes possible. Better recording gear for the courses also becomes part of the videos and streams, so I am excited about more than just opening a new box.

My later Coda MB-1 session explores adding a booster to this microphone’s chain. Here, I am getting started with the SM7B and sharing the processed audio I am actually using.
