HOTT CD204: Bring Out the Old CD Case and See What Still Plays

Opening the portable player and trying a disc from my collection.

Article published November 4, 2026.

I bring out the big old CD case for this one. Before I even get to a music disc, I find game discs and other pieces of the collection I have not looked through in a while.

Modern connections on a familiar shape

The HOTT CD204 has the portable-player shape I remember, with a display and a compartment for two AA batteries. There is also a USB-C power input.

I specifically point out that the cable supplies power; it is not charging an internal battery in this model. I do not demonstrate USB audio or data transfer.

Find a disc worth trying

I get through the case, pass over a very rough-looking disc and settle on a Red Hot Chili Peppers CD. It has some marks, but it gives the player a real disc to read.

I put it in, start playback and listen through the headphones. Hearing the music come out of a portable CD player again is surprisingly satisfying.

A short playback check

I move the player around a little and keep listening. It continues playing during that brief handling, although I do not treat it as a formal anti-skip test or proof that any damaged disc will work.

The USB power option is what makes me think about keeping it near a speaker system as well as carrying it with headphones. This is the first playback session, before measuring battery life or checking every supported format.
