Screensaver XP: Bringing the Bliss Hill into Unreal Engine
My 2022 take on the familiar Windows XP landscape, with moving grass and a day/night cycle.
Article published November 4, 2026.
That green hill is hard to forget. With Screensaver XP, I took the familiar idea of the Windows XP Bliss wallpaper and made my own moving rendition in Unreal Engine.
Grass, sky and a changing time of day
The July 2022 demo shows the hill, flowing grass and a day/night cycle. It is a scene you can leave on screen and watch change, instead of a still desktop image.
Hide the controls and enjoy the scene
In the demonstrated build, Tab hides the text. Pressing it again brings back the metrics and settings, including the frame-rate display. Escape closes the program.
I described it as a free itch.io download, with an optional donation on the download screen. The original project link is below; that is the place to check the available build rather than treating this older demo as a promise about every current Windows setup.
