Qualisys Motion Capture: Performers Drive the Characters in Real Time
A short interview about optical tracking, props and the choices behind a capture system.
Article published November 4, 2026.
I stop at the Qualisys demonstration to watch performers drive animated characters, then ask Jeff from the company how the tracking works and what a studio needs to think about.
The demo retargets motion to characters
Jeff describes optical motion capture and the live retargeting on display. One performer drives a Viking character, while another performer using prosthetics drives a crab character.
That is the demonstration discussed in the interview. I do not independently measure its latency or turn a representative's quality claims into comparative test results.
Props and cameras can be tracked too
I ask about the props behind us. Jeff explains that the system tracks markers, with applications extending beyond performers to props, cameras and other objects.
He also describes work in life sciences, sports analysis and robotics. Those are applications discussed by the representative, without a clinical or engineering-accuracy evaluation in this short session.
The camera count changes the quote
When I ask about pricing, the answer depends on the cameras, the size of the space and the capture requirements. The figure in the March 2025 interview is historical, not a current price quote for a studio setup.
The useful takeaway is to start with what needs to be tracked and the space it must cover. The original Qualisys website link is below for current system information.
