Overview
SalinasRadio.com was an internet radio station and blog built to promote the Monterey Bay music scene. Mike Rodriguez built it: a small streaming server on a cheap host with an upstream server at home, a website, and one favourite local band, Rum & Rebellion, streamed with their permission. Listeners followed, other bands began sending in songs for free air time, and the station soon moved to a dedicated server that could handle multiple streams.
The station streamed local music live to anyone in the world and grew into a WordPress site with artist pages, band news and listings for local shows. On 13 April 2009 it opened its first genre station, "Rock, Metal, and Acoustic", in beta alongside the all-genres stream. An On Demand Player, also a beta, played songs from the participating local bands; in March 2010, after a long move, it was working while the live streams were still down.
By November 2009 the Artists page listed dozens of local acts, with about 150 more on a contact list; PyroSoft's project timeline credits the site with showcasing over 50 local bands. In March 2011 Mike announced that the live stream would return and ordered a new streaming server. Archived copies show the site running from April 2009 into mid-2013, with the last posts dated April 2011.
