I want more usable level from my SM7B without just pushing the rest of my audio setup harder. The Coda MB-1 is the little box I try in this recording, and I leave in pauses so you can hear the background as I change settings.

## The bigger Coda is my choice

I choose the MB-1 over the smaller Stealth version and open its simple box. The manual calls for phantom power, which is an important requirement to check with the connected equipment.

I look over the body and locking connection, then move to the actual setup: SM7B, Coda and my MVX2U interface.

## Change one connection, then listen

With the booster connected, I try several interface gain settings. I then remove it and connect the microphone directly, increasing the interface gain again while leaving short quiet sections.

When I reconnect the Coda at the higher setting, the signal clips and I immediately turn it down. That is a noticeable moment in the comparison.

## What the numbers mean here

I describe a 22 dB difference between two settings I used. It is my experience with this chain and those controls, rather than a calibrated measurement of the booster’s gain or proof that every setup becomes noise-free.

My [original SM7B unboxing](<https://pyrosoft.pro/blog/unboxing-and-testing-the-shure-sm7b-30280b94>) gives some background on why I upgraded the microphone. This later session is about trying the extra stage in its signal path.

All four original product links are below; I do not test the other three boosters head-to-head in this video.
